| Introduction | Introduction The two genres I have chosen to study for my musical investigation are American opera and Japanese folk music. I chose to study these two genres because I find that the juxtaposition of Western and Asian music to be interesting in how it illustrates how the development of tonality within a musical genre shapes the broader characteristics of a music culture. The link between American opera and Japanese folk music that I am studying is the use of the pentatonic scale and its resultant effects on tonality.
